The Women’s Breakfast: What is it? What the plans are to date?

Hi All!

I don’t remember whether we had a Women’s Breakfast at our 25th Reunion but I think we’ve had them at our cluster reunions ever since. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the idea, the Women’s Breakfast is a space just for women (alumni, wives, daughters, granddaughters, significant women others, friends) to meet, bond, and talk about issues that are relevant to this particular place in our lives at this particular time. And yes, we also eat breakfast.

The Women’s Breakfast Committee has been meeting via email for a couple of months and held a conference call in February.  Our experienced enthusiastic leader is Gael Schwertman Treesiwin and the other members are Debbie Horn Roosevelt,  Bonnie Wishne,  Roberta Leinwand Opper and myself.  We had no control over the day and time of the Women’s Breakfast (Sunday morning 8 AM – 10 AM) or the place (one room in Asia House, although we are plotting to take over any empty rooms we can find). Or the food, but Gael has been assertive about requesting plenty of coffee and healthy foods rather than the usual pastries. However, these matters are not really in our control…

So here’s the plan:

We’ll meet at 8:00 for a short Qi Gong exercise led by Debbie – no experience or physical fitness required. Breakfast is next, followed by some introductions and turning the non-grad guests into honorary Oberlin grads for the Reunion. We’ll sing a few songs led by Rhonda Liss and then break into small groups to discuss topics which we’ll all decide on in advance (topic details follow in the next post).  After the discussions, which are really the heart of the WB, we’ll reconvene, talk a bit about what we discussed and close with few songs. We encourage groups to continue their discussions later in the day.

We hope that everyone will set their internal clocks, cell phones, etc. and come to the Women’s Breakfast. It has always been a highlight of Oberlin reunions for me and for many others. Remember, the Women’s Breakfast is not only for Oberlin alumni, so do invite any other women at our class reunion.

We’re looking forward to having your suggestions for discussion so please read the next, much shorter mail about possible topics.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Eve

Thanks, Eve, for organizing this!

I recall Women's Breakfasts as wonderful events.

As to topics:    All  listed are relelvant and potentially good.    Only caveat I have is to maybe exclude topics that  are already beng offered for discussion at other times in   " mixed company", as they used to say.

(I am not sure about this, since a women -only meeting on same topic may be diffferent.. I am just suggesting it  since it is one  way to narrow down offerings.)

\Best,

Wendy
