Non-Graduates

Memorials for deceased Class of 1969 graduates can be found by clicking on the main  In Memory: box, but on this page we remember others of our classmates who did not go on to receive Oberlin degrees.

♦ 1968

Jennifer Thomas was from Berea, Ohio. This photo is from the 1966 Hi-O-Hi, when she lived in May Cottage. Her three older brothers were all Oberlin alums: Timothy ’60, Brian ’63, and Jeffrey ’65.

Tragically, during our junior year, Jennifer died at the age of 20 in a car accident near campus. In addition to her brothers, she was survived by her parents, Francis and Elizabeth Thomas of Berea … and her infant nephew, Peter Thomas of Kansas City, born the same week that Jennifer died.

As it happens, Peter Thomas now lives in Oberlin with his wife Diana Steele and their two daughters. During our 50-year reunion, Peter and Diana sang in the Brahms Requiem memorial concert.  At the time, they didn’t realize that Peter’s aunt would have been a member of our Class of 1969.

Diana Steele ( dsteelewos@gmail.com ) writes, “I’ve always been curious about her death.  It must have been a traumatic event for students on campus, and yet I haven’t found any mention of it on your site.  I’d love to hear from anyone who knew her.”
