Facing the Reality that we have a limited time left to be alive

I would like to talk about aging in light of that, at age 70ish, we are facing the recognition that we have a limited number of years left to be here.

It seems that when you reach about 70 years old, something changes in your consciousness and this reality blatantly stares you in the face.

Even if we are relatively healthy, we're confronted with our friends and classmates dying. Also, quite a few people I know were functioning well and, out of the blue, received diagnoses, which gave them only a few months to live and subsequently have died. Others I know, have died suddenly from events like a heart attack.

So, in a sense, as Castaneda said, we are "living with death on our shoulder". Personally, I often carry the awareness that I never know when myself or someone I love dearly, could pass away with short notice.

Life seems very fragile and tenuous and, hence, more and more precious. This is not necessarily a negative or 'bad' thing. But it is something that, at least for me, is important to face but not comfortable or easy to face.

I would love to hear how others are responding to and working with this issue in their day to day life.

(To me, this is a different topic than the one on the list called, "Coping with iur Aging Bodies").

Yes, this is an excellent idea for a topic.  Just two weeks ago,  a close friend suffered a major stroke and died a week later.  You are right..life is fragile.  I think this reality is something we are all thinking about now as we enter our seventies.   One thing I think about is will I have time to finish the things I feel are important to do, and learning to let go of the things that aren't important.

That sounds like an excellent idea for a discussion. Looking at the "In Memory" page of our reunion website has shaken me up - so many of our classmates seem to have passed in the last few years.

Thank you for the idea.

Yes, this topic truly speaks to me.  I guess we all know that anything can happen at anytime, but somehow that becomes MUCH more real after one hits 70....which seems ludicrous.  How can one enjoy life with the persistent drumbeat of death and disability of one's friends, family and the increased possibility that that will include you.  Just damn!
