In Memory

David Weaver

David Weaver

David Wayne Weaver passed away at the age of 76 on December 28th, 2023, at his home in Granite Falls, North Carolina, the result of complications due to a Covid/flu infection.

David was born December 15, 1947, in Hamilton, Ohio, to the late Clarence and Jessie Weaver. He played football at Oberlin, graduating in 1969. As we prepared for our 50-year reunion, he wrote:

One professor had the greatest impact on my student life. I can't think back on Oberlin without fondly thinking of Carey McWilliams, with whom I enjoyed lectures, private discussions and social interactions. Carey was a charismatic, captivating mentor. Although I wasn't as focused on studies as I should have been, my experience at Oberlin prepared me for graduate studies. After taking a year off to teach, coach, and stay under the radar of the draft, I entered law school, funded by my generous employer with whom I spent the next 27 years. That is also where I met my spouse.

David earned his J.D. at the Chase school of Law at Northern Kentucky University in 1974. He worked in business management and marketing in New York, Germany, the U.K., and Ohio before retiring to the Appalachian foothills of North Carolina.

In retirement, David fully embraced his hobby of traveling and became very involved in his neighborhood homeowners association. He enjoyed his morning exercise classes, walking his golden retriever, and spending time with his grandchildren.

David’s wife of 52 years, Helga Weaver, passed away shortly after David. His memory lives on through his children, Lori Weaver Waltonen and Jen Weaver; his grandchildren, Wyatt, Daphne, Miles, and Max Waltonen; and his brothers, Robert and Steven Weaver.

A good friend, a great teammate, a good man and great memories of an epic trip, Cincinnati to Acapulco and back, winter term 1969. R.I.P. Dave

It's comforting to read how well Dave's life turned out. He's not the one of us I'd have guessed would go first. A truly kind person with a good moral compass, and I'm happy to have known him.

Dave and I were good friends during freshman year.  I am very sorry for the news of his death.

It was so nice to reconnect with Dave at our fiftieth reunion. So sad to lose both him and his wife.

Dave and I lived in Barrows Hall--third floor South--as freshmen. He roomed with Guy Martin. The two of them were really great--smart and funny and they were also the first two Southerners I bcame friends with, being an Ohio boy myself. I regret that I didn't keep up with them through the years. I had  a very enjoyable lunch with Dave  when we both returned for our 50th reunion and reminsisced about those days and also compared notes and experiences about Costa Rica, where I had traveled and he was building a house. It was great to get re-acquainted. Very sobering to realize that both Dave and Guy are now gone. As we say, may their memory be for a blessing.
